As part of the extensive renovation of a 17th-century farmhouse in St John, our clients were committed to preserving the property's rich character and timeless charm. Retaining original features, including the granite walls and pillars, was central to the design, ensuring the home's heritage remained at the heart of the finished space.

With a passion for interior design, one of the homeowners played an active role in shaping the aesthetic, bringing a distinctive personal style to the project.

The Challenge

The brief was to create a timeless country kitchen that felt both elegant and authentic, respecting the character and heritage of the property while providing a practical, welcoming space for modern family life and entertaining.

A key priority for our client was the retention of the existing yellow Aga and granite chimney breast, both of which became central features within the design.

To enhance the room's sociable atmosphere, we incorporated integrated bench seating, creating a relaxed setting for family gatherings and informal dining.

A bespoke media unit was also to conceal the television, was also required to ensure the space remained visually cohesive.

The Solution

For the cabinetry, Stoneham’s Penshurst range was chosen for its timeless in-frame detailing and refined contemporary aesthetic.

Finished in Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin, a soft off-white with warm beige undertones, the cabinetry creates a bright and elegant backdrop that complements the character of the property.

To introduce warmth and visual depth, a greige oak finish was incorporated on the island and integrated bench seating. This subtle contrast adds texture and interest while maintaining a calm, neutral palette throughout the space.

Design Details

Designed as a focal feature within the room, the bespoke media unit conceals the television behind bi-fold pocket doors finished in vintage hand-silvered antique mirror.

The decorative mirrored surfaces reflect both natural light and the owners’ colourful artwork, bringing additional character and depth to the space. Open timber shelving on either side provides an opportunity to display treasured possessions and personal touches.

The finishing details were considered with equal care. Armac Martin solid brass handles and shelf brackets add a sense of craftsmanship and quality, while open timber shelving around the sink area is enhanced by decorative wall lights, creating a warm and welcoming ambience.

Together, these thoughtful elements complete a kitchen that balances practicality, elegance and enduring character.

Appliances

To complement the existing Aga, a Siemens oven was incorporated within the kitchen island, providing additional cooking capacity for modern family life and entertaining.

Positioning the appliance within the island allowed it to be integrated discreetly into the design, ensuring that contemporary technology did not detract from the kitchen’s traditional character and timeless aesthetic.

Worksurfaces

Selecting the right worksurface was a key element of the design. It needed to complement the kitchen’s timeless aesthetic while accommodating the scale of the large central island with a flawless, seamless finish.

Staron Cotton White was chosen for its elegant appearance and practical performance. The soft white solid surface, enhanced by subtle beige veining, introduces a refined sense of luxury while harmonising beautifully with the kitchen’s warm, neutral palette.

To further elevate the design, a bespoke edge profile was incorporated on the island, creating a distinctive feature that feels both dramatic and in keeping with the kitchen’s traditional character.

Exceptionally durable, non-porous and easy to maintain, Staron is ideally suited to the demands of a busy family kitchen, offering both beauty and long-lasting performance.

All of our worksurfaces are expertly fabricated and finished in our dedicated workshop in Five Oaks by our skilled team of specialist fabricators and installers, ensuring the highest standards of craftsmanship throughout.
